Vietnam has more than 5.8 billion tons of bauxite but has only now produced the first aluminum ingots. In your opinion, is this a historical turning point or is it still too slow compared to its potential?
After 11 years of investment and construction, Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Factory in Nhan Co Industrial Park has officially announced Vietnam's first aluminum ingot product. This is an important milestone when the domestic metallurgical industry for the first time completes the final link in the chain of bauxite mining, alumina production and electrolysis into high value-added metallic aluminum.
The project is invested by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Co., Ltd., started in 2015 on an area of about 129 hectares with a design capacity of 450,000 tons of aluminum per year when all three phases are completed.

According to information announced at the ceremony, Vietnam currently owns more than 5.8 billion tons of bauxite, concentratedweak in the Central Highlands region. This is considered one of the strategic resources to develop the aluminum industry, instead of just exporting raw materials or alumina as before.
The successful production of aluminum ingots marks the ability to master domestic aluminum electrolysis technology. This not only helps increase the value of bauxite resources but also creates a foundation for developing aluminum-using industries such as mechanical engineering, automobiles, aviation, electronics, construction materials, renewable energy and many high-tech fields.
Compared to large aluminum producing countries such as China, Russia and Australia, the scale of 450,000 tons per year is still quite modest. However, this is a strategically significant first step because for the first time Vietnam owns a closed production chain from resources to finished metal products right in the country.
The project is also expected to create a significant economic impact for the Central Highlands region by creating jobs for about 3,500 workers, contributing to local GRDP growth and reducing aluminum imports with an estimated value of about 1.5 billion USD per year. If the next phases are completed on schedule, Vietnam's metallurgical industry will have an additional foundation to improve competitiveness and expand the production cycle.supplying materials and attracting supporting industries to develop stronger in the coming years.
