Trump Administration Studying Offshore Nuclear Energy Deployment

The Trump administration is conducting research into deploying offshore nuclear power, with the Marine Minerals Management Service and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) agreeing this week to coordinate on developing future projects. This announcement comes amid a sharp increase in electricity demand due to the development of big technology.



Potential of Underground Reactor Systems

Interim Director of the Marine Minerals Management Service, Matt Giacona, said: "Subsea reactor systems have been safely deployed in naval applications for decades, demonstrating their potential as a reliable energy source in harsh marine environments. While there are no plans or approvals for commercial deployment on the Outer Coast currently, this could significantly strengthen America's energy security going forward."



Momentum From Big Tech

This new partnership is part of a larger effort to increase the share of nuclear energy in the U.S. energy mix. Reports from Reuters say President Trump wants to quadruple the country's nuclear capacity by 2050. In fact, nuclear power, previously in decline due to high investment costs and perception of major risks, is now making a comeback thanks to its zero-emissions operating principles and basic electricity supply capabilities.

Competitiveness of Nuclear Energy

Nuclear energy is resurgent, but floating nuclear energy development is not yet a globally widespread technology. There is currently only one operating offshore nuclear power plant, Russia's Akademik Lomonosov, built to supply electricity to the Chukotka and Yakutia regions. The plant began commercial operations in 2020 and recently produced one billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.



International Moves on Offshore Nuclear Energy

India is aiming to build five small modular reactors by 2033, while China is also researching the development of floating nuclear power. One company recently announced plans to build an offshore logistics center using nuclear power, producing zero emissions.



In this context, an American startup called Bluecore Energy is developing small modular reactors that can be deployed on floating docks to power ports and other infrastructure.



Challenges From Government and Environmental Community

However, not all agencies in the US federal government support offshore nuclear energy. The Home Office has expressed national security concerns regarding the technology, with issues such as radar interference. Environmentalists also say offshore nuclear power generation is "a bad idea" that could harm marine life.



Thus, while floating nuclear energy is increasingly attracting attention, there are still many challenges that need to be overcome for this technology to develop strongly in the future.
