Gasoline Prices Surge in Vietnam as E10 RON95 Exceeds 20,500 VND/Liter

Effective 3:00 PM on July 16, retail prices for all petroleum products in Vietnam have been adjusted upward in line with global energy market fluctuations. Notably, E10 RON95 gasoline has surpassed the 20,500 VND/liter threshold for the first time, significantly impacting daily life and business operations across the country.

Detailed Price Adjustments for Petroleum Products

According to decisions by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Ministry of Finance, gasoline and oil prices have been significantly increased starting from 3:00 PM on July 16. The specific adjustments are as follows:

  • E5 RON92 gasoline: increased by 1,440 VND/liter to 19,830 VND/liter
  • RON95-III gasoline: increased by 1,440 VND/liter to 21,590 VND/liter
  • E10 RON95 gasoline: increased by 1,440 VND/liter to 20,590 VND/liter
  • Diesel oil: increased by 990 VND/liter to 19,050 VND/liter
  • Kerosene: increased by 880 VND/liter to 19,960 VND/liter
  • Fuel oil: increased by 1,120 VND/liter to 16,830 VND/kg

This marks the third price adjustment in July 2023, with this latest increase being more substantial than the previous two. As a result, domestic petroleum prices have reached their highest levels in many months.

Factors Behind the Price Increase

The latest price adjustment stems from global energy market developments. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil demand has recovered strongly following the decline during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Particularly, demand from China—the world's largest energy consumer—is rebounding.

Additionally, OPEC+'s decision to maintain production cuts continues to pressure global supply. Under the agreement, OPEC+ will sustain production cuts of approximately 3.66 million barrels per day through the end of 2023.

Furthermore, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine continue to create instability in the global energy market.

Impact on Consumers and Businesses

The surge in gasoline prices has directly affected daily life and business operations. According to economic experts, this price hike will increase transportation, logistics, and production costs, leading to inflationary pressure.

For ordinary citizens, using motorcycles and cars has become significantly more expensive. For a motorcycle with a 5-liter tank, each full refill now costs approximately 7,000-7,200 VND more. For automobiles, costs can increase by 20,000-30,000 VND per full tank.

For transportation and logistics businesses, fuel costs account for 30-40% of total operational expenses. Higher oil prices will force these companies to increase freight rates, affecting product pricing.

Market Reactions

Following the announcement of price adjustments, many transportation and logistics companies have announced fare adjustments. According to the Vietnam Automobile Transportation Association, road freight rates may increase by 5-10% to compensate for higher fuel costs.

At gas stations across the country, consumers have been stockpiling fuel. Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, owner of a gas station in Hanoi, reported: "Morning traffic on July 16 increased by 20-30% compared to normal days. Many people fear prices will continue to rise in the coming days, so they're filling their tanks as a precaution."

The comparison shows that gasoline prices in Vietnam rank among the highest in the region, second only to Singapore and the Philippines. This affects the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods in international markets.

Future Outlook

According to energy market analysts, oil prices are likely to continue fluctuating in the coming period. Brent crude oil is expected to trade between $80-90 per barrel in Q3 2023.

Mr. Tran Dinh Long, an energy economics expert, commented: "Domestic gasoline prices may continue to face upward pressure in the coming months due to recovering global demand and ongoing supply uncertainties. However, the increases may not be as sharp as this one, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts slower global economic growth."

To mitigate the impact of rising gasoline prices, the government is considering measures such as tax adjustments, support for low-income households, and assistance for heavily affected industries.

Conclusion

The recent surge in gasoline prices, particularly E10 RON95 exceeding 20,500 VND/liter, presents a significant challenge to daily life and business operations in Vietnam. Global energy market fluctuations remain the primary factor influencing domestic petroleum prices.

In this context, flexibly regulating the petroleum market, ensuring stable supply, and controlling inflation are critical government priorities. Additionally, accelerating the development of renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency represent long-term solutions to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
