China Invests Early in Namibia: Strategic Energy and Mineral Cooperation
China is not waiting for Namibia to become an oil producer. Instead, this country made early investment moves. During an official visit to Beijing this week, Namibia and China signed eight cooperation agreements covering the fields of energy, key minerals, infrastructure, agriculture and economic development. This is part of China's efforts to secure a leading position in Africa's next big energy story.
Namibia's Investment Dynamics
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia's first female President, has spent the week courting investment as her government seeks to diversify the economy, which still faces high unemployment. China, meanwhile, appears eager to assist, as long as it comes with access to the country's growing list of strategic resources.
Oil Discovery In Namibia
Shell and TotalEnergies have discovered about 2.6 billion barrels of crude oil offshore Namibia, with production forecast to begin before the end of the decade. If development is on schedule, Namibia could become the fourth largest oil producer in Africa by 2030.
Strategic Minerals Agreement
The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of uranium, lithium and rare earth elements. These minerals also have strategic value equivalent to crude oil. The deal also emphasizes on-site processing and technology transfer, a growing trend among African resource producers, who are increasingly reluctant to simply export raw materials abroad.
Chinese Investment In Namibia
| Target | Data |
|---|---|
| Total Chinese investment in Namibia | About 4.2 billion USD |
| Investment rate in the metal sector | Almost completely |
| Namibia's export ratio to China | About 25% |
| Uranium export rate | About 85% |
China's Long-Term Strategy in Africa
Securing access to Namibia's future oil production and consolidating its position on key minerals is a logical extension of China's long-term strategy in Africa. Financial support from China is a great way for Namibia to turn its geological potential into economic growth.
This is an important step in shaping Namibia's economic future, while expanding China's influence in the region, creating new opportunities for both sides.
