40 Years of Maritime Development: A Historic Milestone for Vietnam's Oil and Gas Industry

Exactly 40 years ago, amidst the celebratory atmosphere of the Đổi Mới (Renewal) initiative launched by the Party's VI Congress, the first drop of commercial oil was extracted, marking a significant milestone in the history of Vietnam's oil and gas industry. This event is considered strategically important, not only transforming the landscape of the fledgling industry but also making a substantial contribution to the country's socio-economic development.

Historical Context - The Oil and Gas Aspiration

Before the first drops of oil, Vietnam faced a severe energy shortage. The demand for fuel for production and daily living was continuously increasing while the country's self-sufficiency capability was virtually non-existent. In this context, the search for and exploitation of oil and gas was identified as one of the key tasks to ensure energy security and promote economic development.

Historic Breakthrough - The First Commercial Oil Drop

In 1986, the White Tiger oilfield (Bạch Hổ) in Blocks 04 and 05.1 successfully extracted the first commercial oil drop. This event not only marked the birth of Vietnam's oil and gas industry but also opened a new chapter in the country's energy use history. From a country that imported nearly all petroleum products, Vietnam gradually became a producer and exporter of crude oil.

40 Years of Extraordinary Development

Over the past 40 years, Vietnam's oil and gas industry has achieved remarkable accomplishments:

  • Development of modern infrastructure with drilling rigs, oil pipelines, refineries...
  • Expansion of operations from the East Sea to new areas such as Nam Con Son, Cuu Long...
  • Growth in crude oil output from several thousand tons to millions of tons per year
  • Development of high-quality human resources, self-reliant in technology and management
  • Active participation in the global energy value chain

Contribution to the National Economy

The oil and gas industry of Vietnam has become one of the key economic sectors, making important contributions to the state budget. For many years, oil and gas have been the main export products, bringing significant foreign exchange to the country.

Digital Transformation in the Oil and Gas Industry

In the context of the Industry 4.0 revolution, Vietnam's oil and gas industry is actively applying digital technology to production activities. IoT, AI, and Big Data solutions are being deployed to optimize the extraction process, improve efficiency, and minimize risks. This is an important step for the industry to maintain its position in the global competitive landscape.

Sustainable Development - Challenges and Opportunities

In light of the global energy transition trend and the Net Zero commitment by 2050, Vietnam's oil and gas industry faces numerous challenges. However, this also presents an opportunity for the industry to transform towards sustainable development, focusing on:

  • Increasing energy efficiency
  • Investing in renewable energy and green hydrogen
  • Applying emission reduction technologies
  • Developing a circular economy

Future Vision

In the face of climate change challenges and global energy demand, Vietnam's oil and gas industry needs to continue innovating, applying advanced technologies, and developing high-quality human resources. The combination of traditional oil and gas development with renewable energy will be the inevitable path to ensure national energy security in the future.

The 40-year journey of Vietnam's oil and gas industry is a testament to the wisdom, vision, and determination of the Party and State in exploiting the country's potential. From the first oil drop, the industry has made significant contributions to the nation's construction and defense, bringing a warm and happy life to the people.
